View Full Version : Father-Daughter - Should I talk to her

First, I’d like to express to everyone that might read this that I’ve read many of the posts on this site before registering, and the responses to those posts – both positive and negative. My only hope is that my situations (I have more than one, and I will explain briefly below) do not get misunderstood or misjudged.

A brief history of situation #1: When I was 17 years old, I met my mother for the first time since I was 2 years old. For reasons unknown to anyone other than my mother, she’d allowed my father to raise me, and she remained out of the picture until I was practically an adult.

The first meeting with my mother was a sweet experience, but something odd also happened. When we first hugged and kissed (on the cheek), the hug seemed to linger – on both our parts. My mother, although estranged from me all those years, acted like a parent and despite the obvious attraction we instantly felt for each other, she retreated and visibly held back from any further contact with me. The weirdest thing about the whole situation was that I had traveled a very long distance to meet my mother, so I had to spend the night at her house, and at the time she was single. So here we were alone, obviously attracted to each other, and nothing happened. My mom simply put me up in another room, and that was that. Afterwards, she made it a point to keep a reasonable distance from – ultimately, I ended up losing contact with her again.

Fast forward 30 years into the future to situation # 2, and I have in many ways become my mother (whom I haven’t had contact with since I was 18 years old). What I mean by saying I have become my mother is that I too have a child that I became estranged from when she was only 6 years old. Her mom and I split, and when her mom left town, it took me almost 13 years to find her and my daughter. To make a long story short, when my daughter turned 19 years old she decided she wanted to come to my state and spend some time with me. Our first meeting reminded me of my own first meeting with my Mom. We were so drawn to each other, it was uncanny. She felt it, and so did I. There was an almost electric feeling between us. I thought at the time that I needed to take a lesson from my mother and I decided to rise up to the challenge of being a parent, and I have acted as such ever since. She ended up living with me for two years before moving out with a boyfriend. We have a very warm father-daughter relationship, and every time we are together, we still feel that electricity and I fight for my normal relationship with my girl.

For a very long time I felt something must’ve been wrong with me and my Mom. I didn’t think about it for at least the last 10 years or so, until the same feelings re-emerged with my daughter. I just knew something was wrong – that is until I discovered GSA and this site, which explains a tremendous amount of what’s been going on. I regularly see my daughter, and I realize that despite her early attempts as seducing me (which I never really gave a second thought), she does respect and love me – the way I love and respect her. She is a tremendous source of joy, and happiness for me and I just would never want to lose her adult friendship and love, which for me is an amazing gift.

My request for advice is this: after reading and seeing the light for the first time about GSA, I have felt the need to openly discuss this topic with my daughter for the very first time. My question is, should I, or should our lives just continue to move on the course we’ve been on for the last year since she moved out. I haven’t given the full account of the things that have transpired in relationship to save time – you just need to know that nothing sexual has ever happened between us because as I have mentioned above, I am the parent and as such have decisively ensured that our relationship not go beyond father-daughter. I have struggled with trying to understand my feelings for so long, and I can’t help but wonder if my daughter has the same struggles. I felt that my Mom’s rejection when I was 17 was my fault – now I know she was simply trying to do the right thing, but she took it too far and dropped out of my life. My daughter and I are too close for that, but I really want her to understand that I am not rejecting her. Should I broach the subject with her or not? Thanks for reading!!!

Dear emcompnut,

How refreshing to hear from someone who's story is in the stage you are in. Some of the stories with parent child just end up in total pain and disaster due to lack of knowledge and self control.

I will start by addressing the situation with your mother. The two situations are not really different. Your mother realized what the both of you were feeling. She was the adult and the parent. She could have followed her emotions and allowed a sexual relationship to happen. You probably would not have resisted due to you need for her to love you.

At 17 this would have later seemed to you a molestation and due to your emotional state and hers, it would have been considered so and could have caused damage to you and much guilt for her.

I know you don't think of it as a good ending because she left your life again but it could be that her parental feelings were stronger than she expected and once again she left your life thinking it was best for you.

I don't know her reasons for leaving the first time as your letter is just touching on the basics which makes it hard to see the whole picture.

You asked if you should bring this up with your daughter. I ask you what you think it might accomplish? I see a discussion of the subject as something that might bring up the old feelings and her desires to be your lover to accomplish having you completly as she wanted to as a child. There is an ownership that happens in this type of parent/child relationship saying" This is proof that we love each other". Actually it is this bonding process that causes more problems not less.

You have stated that your relationship with your daughter is a good one even though it took a long up hill battle to get it there so why not leave what is working alone.

Keep reminding yourself that you are her father and it you job to guide and direct and love her not be her sexual partner. You have worked very hard to keep it that way.

You may want to ask yourself what you think you would feel and want from your mother if you met her now?. Would the old feelings return? I can only guess the answer.

I don't think we realize how deep the bond is between parent and child and when we lose our parent or our child and reunite, all those feelings of loss and desparation return and we want to consume that person. We want all others to go away and leave us to our bonding which can get way out of hand due to our unspent emotions that we have stored away.

Your mother must have wanted so badly to hold you and caress you as she would have when you were a child. You wanted the same type of action but to that we have a reaction which causes us to act as sexual adults not mother/father and child.

Thank you for writing. I hope this is of some help to you.

My advice is the old saying, "IF IT AIN'T BROKE, DON'T FIX IT".

Good luck on your continued life long relationship with your daughter and Bravo for your endurance.

Dear Barb,

I have spoken privately with one other person who used hypothetic situations to help me see if speaking to my daughter about this subject would be wise; he also used the same method to re-enact the reunion with my mother - both back then, and a possible future one. The outcome of these hypothetical situations were not what I'd expected.

To say thank you for your invaluable insight just seems so insufficient. For so long I thought that there was someone wrong only with me, and now I am coming to find out that this is a pervasive situation. The advice you give is a confirmation of what my friend had advised as well.

The clarity of thoughts expressed in your words give me not only comfort in the knowledge that my behavior has been correct, but also provide me with the fortitude I need to ensure that I never cross the line with my daughter whom I love much more than sex. Yes, there are some men for whom sex is everything, and they are willing to sacrifice just about anything to satisfy this incredible drive. I was once a slave to my impulses, but only up to a point. These days, I am extremely careful of both my thoughts and my actions because I dearly love my wife, who knows absolutely nothing about this part of my life, and I love my daughter, the main subject of these posts. The older I've become, the more I realize that love is far more important than physical gratification.

I hope this forum continues to help people just as it has helped me, and it is people like you who care enough to take the time to read and post a reply that make a difference.

Thank you again!

Hi guys
Please help me... I’m from Poland and I’m not very accustomed with the Internet.
I hear that I can make pretty easy money by being a video chat model.
Someone recommended me a website, Live Video Chat - Live for Chat (http://www.liveforchat.com)
He told me there are a lot of members because they have a full screen video chat and also the price is good.
I would like to create a chat host account there but I couldn’t manage to create one.
It keeps telling me I didn’t fill in all the required fields.
