Hey Shake.

I recognize you from the Primetime comments page.

My first comment about the petition is NOT to use the Wikipedia incest article to introduce the thing. Whoever wrote the Wiki piece is not on our side.

Second, there is no "umbrella law forbidding interfamily unions" in the USA. Incest is not a federal crime. It is illegal only at the state level, and with varying degrees of illegality. In Virginia and Delaware, for instance, having sex with your sister is a misdemeanor. In Idaho, it can result in life imprisonment.

The other problem I have is with introducing the word "incest" right in the headline of the piece. Technically all of us having sexual relations with our relations are committing "incest", but the word is so loaded with emotional baggage, and people just automatically go "eww" when they hear the word.

And why throw sexual assault into the bag? I don't want to legalize sexual assault. I know that's not what you're advertising, but it's what it sounds like. Half of the people who read that headline will either not be paying attention, or be morons. They will see "Change the Incest and Sexual Assault Laws", but they will read it as "Protect Child Molestors and Rapists."

The very opposite of what we are selling.

Instead, I would go with something like "Legalize All Sexual Relations Between Consenting Adults."

You can go on to argue that all persons of legal age of consent, in a consensual sexual relationship, deserve equal protection under the law as provided by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution, regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, or relationship to one another.

"In a free society, in which interracial, gay and lesbian couples have a right to privacy and freedom from criminal prosecution when they engage in sexual activity, it follows that all consenting adults, including those who happen to be related to one another, are entitled to that same right."

This will say the exact same thing in a calmer, and therefore more persuasive manner.

I'd put my signature under something like that.

Hi Shake & Osiris,
Great thing you're attempting to do Shake, but i agree entirely with you Osiris. The word "incest" cunjures up all sorts of hatred and nastys in peoples minds. It should be used as little as possible. It certainly has no place in me and mines life, and does not deplict the true reason that we are together. Good luck Shake.

When I read your desire to start a petiton on this site, it gave me a bad taste. I'm trying not to sound harsh as typing something out is not the same as talking to someone and can be taken badly.

Please understand that I as the host of this site would prefer not to have the petition on this site. I want this site to be for others to share their feelings not to make a political statment.

I understand your need to want to do this but would ask that you use your own forum or start one on your own behalf.

I have enough problems keeping all kinds of issues off this site and would be gratful to you if you would do this on your own and not on the gsa site.
