Marriage between Siblings

Twins who were separated at birth, and who later married each other without knowing that they were brother and sister, have had their marriage annulled.

As babies they were adopted by different families and neither was told that they had a twin. Later in life, they met, fell in love, and married before discovering that they were siblings. They were granted an annulment at a special hearing at the High Court in London.

Marriages between people sharing blood, such as siblings, have been banned for “consanguinity” for many centuries, although modern genetic science is not precise about where to draw the line to avoid undesirable inbreeding.

A marriage between people who are too closely related isn’t valid. The law speaks of the “prohibited degrees of relationship” and two types of closeness can be measured. Consanguinity concerns people descended from the same stock or a common ancestor. Affinity concerns people related through marriage or civil partnership.

Actually I think the case you are referring to was invented by a British politician to promote the opening of adoption records.

That isn't to say that such a case has not happened somewhere at some time, only that this specific case was fabricated. For a good cause, but still fabricated.

I suspect that there have been many cases of siblings marrying and never discovering their blood relationship at all. Others might discover the truth and keep it secret.

Marriage between Siblings

Incest is wrong.
bestiality is wrong.
Marrying own siblings is wrong.
For you to ask this question to us is even more wrong because we have moral values too.

Incest IS wrong when you're talking about the grotesque meaning of the word as the sexual abuse of a child by someone who is related to them. That is so obviously and unquestionably wrong that it isn't even worth discussing.

Incest when it involves two adults in a loving relationship isn't so easily condemned. Once upon a time such a relationship could be honestly described as very wrong for the simple reason that sex lead to pregnancy. Today the link between sex and procreation has been broken. There are some half a dozen highly effective methods of contraception available, including surgical sterilization. Couples who are too closely related to have children together can avoid the problem altogether without having to break up. (Yay for medical science!)

Whether marriage between siblings is right or wrong depends on the siblings in question. Are they responsible enough to avoid having children together? Is their relationship a good one, or do they mistreat one another? I'd argue that marriage between a brother and sister who treat each other with love and kindness and who avoid having children together is categorically superior from a moral standpoint to a marriage between non-relatives that is abusive and that leads to children growing up without a mother or father because the marriage ended in divorce.

It is all too easy to condemn the choices of others because you do not understand those choices, and would not make those choices yourself. But your disapproval does not make those choices wrong.

A choice or course of action is right or wrong depending upon the consequences that are created as a result. Choices that lead to good outcomes are right, and choices that lead to bad outcomes are wrong. Whether someone else likes those choices or not when they are not a party to the consequences is patently irrelevant.

The love of my life is a woman who is related to me as my half-sister. We choose to be together as a couple, a choice that is ours to make as free adults. The approval of others is neither requested nor required.
