Councelling
Hi everyone
I wanted to ask you all if anybody has felt the benefit of councelling, I had my first session this week and have to say I felt it a waste of time. I feel I have had more support and understanding from you guys, she just sat in the seat staring at me and nodding, I was uncomfortable with her. In fact I am certain that she was more intrigued by GSA and what kind of people get into this 'thing'.......... She didnt seem to have a clue, I dont want to see her again as I felt I spent my time explaining just what adoption GSA is all about.. Has anybody ever felt like that, I really dont want to go back but maybe thats just the way councelling goes...... thoughts anybody????????? x H |

Counseling
I found that when I did counseling it took me a while to find somone I was comfortable with. I had many counselors that either wanted to medicate me right from the start or they would ask me what I wanted to accomplish from counseling. I think most of the time I wanted to express my feelings and get some sort of constructive feedback. I went thru several counselors before I decided that I could do on my own what they were doing for me.
The thing that helped me a lot was self help books. I read a lot of books on emotional issues. Specifically cognative therapy. I also read books that dealt with anxitey related issues which I was experiencing but didn't even realize. I don't know the names of all the books offhand but there is my personal fav for women which is called "Every Womans Emotional Well Being". It's been a great deal of help to me. The anxiety books have also because they taught me how to realize when I was thinking irrationally and gave me useful tools to help change that. Anyway, don't give up. You will have to discover what is right for you. If you do feel uncomfortable with your current counselor you may want to give it a couple more sessions to see if it changes, and if it doesn't then look for someone else. There are plenty of them out there. I wish you the best with things. -S |

Hi Helpless,
I had specialised adoption counselling with a lady just over 2 years ago. She was a great help. Obviously because it was "specialised" she was fully trained and fully understood GSA issues. However, I had some counselling recently through my GP and I too felt that I had to explain to her what GSA was all about! Goes to show you though, how much WE have learnt! Teenie |
