westermark effect

Hi everyone,

It is so heartening to see how this website has grown over the past few years so a big thank you to Barb for all her hard work....

It is interesting to see that some of you have mentioned the westermark effect......I agree that this is something valid. The thoughts of having a sexual relationship with my adopted siblings or parents is revolting to me....however, if I wanted to, given we are not biologically related, would that be illegal? I would be interested to see anyone's insights, as for me the relationship with my bf is one that I made as a consenual adult and it is the family that I grew up with that would be incestual for me....

Hope that this makes sense.....

Best wishes to all and keep posting...

Regards, Mar

I completely agree with you....like you said, I could never think of the family I grew up with in that way. I feel like people who aren't affected by gsa don't understand how we see our relationships (as someone new we are meeting for the first time, just like any other new couple that starts a relationship). My mother often uses that as a comeback when we argue about this, which is quite often. She'll say,"What if it were your brother and sister doing what you are doing?" But it's not the same...they were in diapers together and ate together, and played together. Even people I grew up with that aren't related to me, I could never think of them in such a manner. I think you are right...it would be more incestuous to be with those people than someone biologically related to you that you never met....or atleast it would feel that way.

Just thought I'd add my thoughts too and say that I couldn't agree more. When I told my foster mother about us, she asked me how I would feel if it was my son and daughter that were having a relationship. I explained that given the fact they are growing up together, this was highly unlikely! (By the way, my foster mother raised my sister and I and had no part in raising my brother).
