UK Legal Advice Required
Hi there,
I know this might be a bit off topic, but could anyone advise me whether it is possible for my ex-husband to voluntarily terminate his parental rights? He has recently suggested that as he has not been involved in my 3-year-old daughter's life from the age of 4 months, it would be better all round if he terminated all rights to her. Given the immense difficulties I have had with him over the past 3 years, I am more than happy for this to happen, especially as my fb is the only father she has ever truly known. To complicate things further, my ex has suggested that my "partner" adopt my daughter... obviously he has no idea who this "partner" is!! Any help would be appreciated!! |

Why not?
I am no expert of British law, but it seems to me that anyone may voluntarily relinquish any rights one may have to anything.
If your ex-husband truly has no interest in raising his daughter, you do not expect any financial support from him, and he is not expected to have a change of heart sometime down the line, then why not? Just have him sign, in front of witnesses and a notary public, a document stating something like "I, Red's ex-husband, hereby and hereafter relinquish all parental rights with regard to my daughter, Little Red." I would, of course, run any such document by your solicitor to check for weasel holes. Good luck!

Red,
I am not a legal expert either at all, however I suspect it may not be that easy because I imagine the law sees parenthood more as a responsibility than a right! So, if as far as the law is concerned, your ex is the father... then it may not be so straightforward. C |
